Passive Voice (solutions to photocopy)


1)
1- The president is being interviewed…. (Remember the -ing form for continuous tenses)
2- No-one was arrested after… (Remember: NO-ONE / NOBODY as the subject of a negative passive voice; anyone /anybody
3- Was the old man taken…?
4- The traffic lights were being repaired….
5- Has this letter been opened?
6- Taxes should be reduced.
7- Was the email sent? Who was it sent by? (Remember: Who……………..by?)
8- The thief wasn’t caught.

2)
1. Much of London was destroyed by a fire in the seventeenth century. (Past Simple)
2- The man who had been bitten by a snake was given a serum. (Past Perfect)
3- A leader should be a man who can be respected (Infinitive)
4- Many slums are being demolished to make way for new buildings. (Present Continuous)
5- The police are being instructed to take firm action against hooligans. (Present Continuous)
6- He was saved from bankruptcy by the kindness of a friend. (Past Simple)
7- A cease-fire is expected to be declared later this week. (Present Simple / Infinitive)
8- A great deal of research has been done into the possible causes of cancer. (Present Perfect)
9- The worker claimed that he was being victimized by his employers. (Past continuous)
10- The tenant was evicted for not paying his rent. (Past Simple)
11- It had been thought that the Government would do something to help. (Past Perfect)
12-Three hundred new houses will have been built by the end of next year. (Future perfect)

3) Remember: When we have Direct and Indirect Object in the Active Voice, When we write the Passive Voice, the Indirect Object usually becomes the subject (This is the more common option)

1- …...they have been sent the wrong tickets.
2- …..Sally will be given the message.
3- Women are still denied the right to vote in some countries.
4- We may be shown the way by Pat.
5- The students are being taught biology by Professor Harrison.

4)
1- The soldiers were called up by the army.
2- The groceries were paid for by Larry.
3- Thomas was told on by Dave.
4- My dog was looked after by Mrs Williams.
5- Johnny was picked on by a lot of children.
6- I was shown around by your brother.
7- She was ripped off by that street vendor.
8- Sarah was asked out by Paul.
9- Our exams were mixed up by Mr Williams.

5)

6)
1- They should have been cleaned
2- They shouldn’t have been thrown away.

9) REMEMBER: We use this special passive voice when we do not do something ourselves, we ask a professional to do it for us (mechanic, hairdresser, tailor, plumber, etc.)
We can also use it when something bad has happened to some of our belongings (my car, my house, …)
